Oil-based paint takes a long time to dry, but if you leave your brushes poorly cleaned for a few days, they’ll harden and become nearly impossible to restore. To prevent this from happening: After use, wash the brushes thoroughly in solvent, rinse off the solvent with soap, and then coat the brushes with Vaseline. This will create an extra layer of protection, and your brushes will remain in excellent condition⭐️

Art conservator here. Best to use an oil to clean brushes than a petroleum. Remaining petroleum on the brush will mix into your paint and cause the oil to dry uneven and separate over time!

No need to reinvent the wheel, Rembrandt would leave his brushes in linseed oil. At the risk of having a trace amount of non drying petroleum in your paint, is it worth it?
