Absolutely. We can add Myers-Briggs types to this kind of harmful pseudoscience, especially with how it (and other “personality assessments”) have seeped into corporate America

I’m a neuroscientist, iq is such a bad measurement lol. Any time someone brings it up I instantly question their intelligence so in that way it is an iq test. Maybe not in the way that person intended but still

its also worth mentioning that the iq test has been changed at least twice to take out questions white men struggled with more than women and poc

Hey! Psychology student here. So, actually, Binet didn't develop the IQ as we know it today. Binet didn't measure "how much intelligent you are", he made a series of tests to see which children were having more difficulties in classrooms so they could get some extra help. How Binet tests work was just "this kid understands what they need to understand", and if not, how much difficulties was this particular child having. It wasn't a number, rather than a series of categories, being the top one: "This kid is at the standard level." Then, another psychologist name this "mental age", and years later, when this arrive to USA, some psychologist (which name I dont remember) was the one who called it "IQ" and said it was "measuring intelligence". Also, nowadays, there are different tests for different kinds of intelligences (fluid and crystal), but they still have (in my opinion) the same problems you talk about.

No. IQ (intelligence quotient) testing and the underlying construct of general cognitive ability (g) are not pseudoscience. They are among the most extensively studied, reliable, and predictive findings in psychology and psychometrics, though they have clear limits and a history of misuse. Pseudoscience typically involves unfalsifiable claims, resistance to evidence, lack of predictive power, and absence of rigorous measurement. IQ research does the opposite: it uses standardized tests, large samples, replication, statistical modeling, and real-world outcome data. Critiques that treat the entire field as pseudoscience usually conflate the measurement tools + predictive findings with ideological overreach or older flawed theories of r4ce and hierarchy.

Tbh the words “stupid,” “dumb,” and other similar worlds are all ableist as well. Personally though I do like “smooth brained” because that doesn’t actually describe any real condition.

The best book I’ve read on the subject is Stephen J Gould’s ‘The Mismeasure of Man.’ It goes in depth about the history of Binet and IQ tests, eugenics, and essentialism, and does a great job debunking eugenic claims that seem to crop up with every new generation of fascist. Some editions of the book contain an afterward specifically addressing, and refuting, a book called “the Bell Curve” but honestly, the original book didnanfine job of debunking “the bell curve’s” claims before that racist trash was even written. So. For anyone interested, I recommend “The Mismeasure of Man.”

Okay, that is a good take but but I do not understand yet is how were the answers of white people with European descent different from other ethnic groups. So could you explain on how the answers or the questions were built for white people?

I was in a social psych PhD program in 2011 and when I tell you how shocked everyone was every time I said exactly this or called out the general history of eugenics in psych 🤦🏾. Even professors are profoundly, intentionally imo, uneducated in the horrors of their own science.

Agree Iq is a poor indicator of a persons overall potential or value. but it’s not pseudo science. what it does measure relatively well are certain aspects of cognitive ability. Studies do show it does that reliably, is repeatable and is correlated to a number of real world outcomes. Not doubting it can be or has been misused but it can be a useful if not complete tool. for example to identify learning issues in order to provide better support.

YES. In my opinion intelligence is just curiosity, humility, and tenacity. That’s why tech oligarchs want to deteriorate our tenacity (shortening our attention spans, getting the masses hooked on treatlerism, minimizing the amount of interaction we have with others)

I like taking tests. They’re like little puzzles. I took a bunch of online IQ tests one day. Lowest score I got was 85. Highest was 160. I am confident that my IQ is somewhere between those two numbers. They are baloney.

This is the one thing I disagree with you on. Yes IQ has been weaponizes by fascism regimes. But we should have a way to neutrally measure intelligence in regard to pattern recognition, ability to understand concepts, etc. Because these are the demographic of people who 1. Rarely fall into conservatism 2. Have extended creativity and problem solving skills for society
