@luna_vlab: Why do calculus normally when you can algebra-maxx one formula until the problem gives up? Calculus feels hard partly because differential calculus introduces an entire collection of derivative rules: the power rule, product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, and more. But those formulas are really shortcuts built from the same foundation: the limit definition of a derivative. So technically, you could forget every derivative shortcut and return to first principles. You compare two points on a function, move them increasingly close together, and use the limit to find the instantaneous rate of change. Is it efficient? Absolutely not. You will turn a derivative that should take seconds into an unreasonable amount of algebra. But when the formulas disappear from your brain during an exam, it is useful to understand the one idea they all came from.
