I had my students do a project one year to summarize some of the British royal drama as a soap opera……..it was hilarious but very factual. It was a hellava lot more interesting than the way I learned it.

Go out to the villages. The *stories* will curl your toes! Old and current. I had no idea how deeply embedded the gossip ran until I was in a motorbike accident and that’s how I discovered everybody already knew ‘the only Australian in town’ (it was the ‘80s). They knew my entire family history; my sidecar motorbike; where I was at uni; how injured I was, and to help me home if I had a memory lapse (brain injury). I didn’t know any of them, except the vicar’s wife. But the stories in that town could’ve toppled the government. And if you get into aristocratic circles…they exist based on gossip and stories. I was raised with this, despite being first generation Australian. Go to the islands - the Scilly Isles; the Outer Hebrides - I know a story about a prize bull that couldn’t swim and his death divided families for generations.

Please do it. You’ll be brilliant. Tell the story of Lady Jane and Guilford Dudley, and visit her locales. I couldn’t believe how the Dudleys wormed their way into the Tudor courts. Lady Jane Grey was so much more than the Nine Days’ Queen; you can truly tell her story as an avid reader, and a terrified young woman used by so many people.
