As a teacher of 9 years with tattoos and a nose piercing- you’re entering a world that is professional and also dated. You have to understand the rules you’re signing yourself up for with this career. It is not an alternative career even if you are. You are now becoming “the man”. If you want to be a teacher badly enough, you’ll understand that this is a job of a public servant, which means you unfortunately may need to sacrifice parts of yourself to conform to the norm of what “a teacher is”. It sucks but this is the first thing of many that you will need to be flexible on when being a teacher and if you can’t do this, then you’re not gonna cut it long-term as an educator. This advice is coming from an inner city public school teacher for her entire career. Also get out of Texas in general and move somewhere more progressive…….might have a lot to do with your problems 😬

I have cheek piercings, and I live in Texas so I feel you ❤️personally I use these clear circular rings, I take off my balls and add the rings to keep the bar from slipping out. I haven’t had any negative comments about it! I hope it all works out for you.

Teachers have always been how to a different standard in society historically and now. I student taught with a nose piercing and had no problems but I was also prepared to put retainers in because I knew not every program or district is going to be as lenient with that. If I wanted my degree I had to be willing to deal with it for 4 months it may not be fair, but that’s often how it goes for non-tenured teachers in public education.

I do think teachers in my district have facial piercings. My nose is pierced but I think people have more piercings. I also have many tattoos.

As soon as you said Texas, I shook my head. I’m sure it’s gonna be much harder where you are. I hope they let you teach in your former district. My state is more left leaning however, the teacher rules vary from individual school district to individual school district. What should matter is your skill set, your passion to teach, and if you’re able to reach your students.

I understand you, I hear you. As a teacher in elementary and now a teacher that teaches teachers….. it’s not all about what you look like and believe. Districts/schools want student success. This is another perspective: One of the most important parts of being and teaching in the classroom is children’s disengagement in the learning process throughout the day. Look up/research learning environments and how they affect learning. Yes, children will not focus on the learning because of the environment and you are a part of that environment. This is coming from experience. I’m ok with people not agreeing with me. I wish you well. I hope you understand me.

I would like you to know, I have taught in Minnesota for 30 years. I’m he grandma of the school. We have teachers with piercings, tattoos, multi colored hair, openly queer. I teach in one of the highest paying school districts and they actively seek diversity in teachers.

Universities really aren’t that strict — I student taught where I graduated from. Contact someone you trust there and ask them to help facilitate a placement. I’m sure they’ll be sympathetic to your situation and try to accommodate you.

I’m Mexican American. While I don’t fully understand you connection between piercings and ancestry, I can sympathize that it’s important to you. As a teacher, I wonder whether you should have mentioned your piercings at all. If you dress professionally and abide by the code of ethics, the piercings should not be an issue depending on the school. My biggest recommendation is to dress ‘normal’ during your trial period and show them how great of a teacher you are. From there, you can gage how alt you can dress. Wishing you the best.

Not to discourage you but teaching in texas you will be allowed very limited self expression. If you find a district that allows for expression you will still feel pressure and judgement from coworkers, parents, and even students. Teaching is a job where they want you to identify with and represent being a teacher in every aspect of your life and it can be draining.

Put smaller studs/beads on the crossbar on your nose during student teaching for safety and I’m sure you’ll find a district that won’t make you take them out. Don’t bring it up, don’t come with the accommodations unless they bring it up first. It’s not a big deal here (unless there’s a safety issue ie students who grab, special education, etc) but I’m in WA state. Tends to be school by school basis.
