“Highly visible in the culture, underrepresented on the balance sheet.” New research from Dr. Wes Bellamy at the John Mercer Langston Institute lays it out in stark terms: Black men are everywhere in American culture but the numbers tell a different story about our standing in the economy. The report, published this week, finds that: College enrollment among Black men is down 22% since 2010, and even steeper at HBCUs Black unemployment sits at 6.6% — highest of any group tracked by the BLS Black men are the only group whose employment rate has actually declined over the past year The typical Black household has just $2,200 in savings to fall back on compared to $10K for whites. The report is the first in what’s planned to be an annual scorecard, and the researchers behind it aren’t waiting on anyone to fix these systemic issues. Some of the things institutions can do now include: ✅ Make Black male enrollment and retention something colleges actually track and report on, not just an afterthought ✅ Build mentorship, career, and mental-health support for boys well before crisis point — not after ✅ Invest in real, evidence-backed literacy instruction and high-dosage tutoring, starting early ✅ Open more pathways into growing fields like health care, skilled trades, and infrastructure @rlnave
