wow. it costs me 19.50 for drs appointment ( kids are free ) and all our scripts are free... the odd thing might only be subsidized but 99% of medication via script is free. and all hospital stuff is free. only pay fir certain private specialists ect of you chose to. our wait times are 3 to 9 months for non urgent stuff. it also costs maybe 20 for liquid panadol ect with out script

nz govt essentially buys our meds in bulk from pharmaceutical companies through something called pharmac which makes them way cheaper for the government so they can provide them this way. some meds aren't covered so it does suck if you need one of those.

When we lived in Oz my daughter’s asthma meds were $50. They’re free here. There was one doctor who bulk billed but you couldn’t get in, plus if anything went wrong he wasn’t allowed to practise at the local hospital. Which I thought was really weird

People don’t understand how the nz healthcare system works - basic meds are funded.. a lot of life saving ones aren’t. Mine are $800 per month, my friends are 10k… if you have a basic illness it’s funded… if you have anything else you’re more effed than PBS - I’m lucky I’m a dual citizen because I can’t even get the care I need in nz

Buy the generic paracetamol and ibuprofen for the kids. You will find them at any chemist, but discount chemist will have the lowest price. The Panadol/Nurofen brand is a rip off. Also supermarkets can only sell small (20 pk) packs of paracetamol and ibuprofen.

With my medical practice it’s free for 24 year olds and under (same with medications for them) and if you have a community services card to see the Dr for anyone 25 years or older it’s $20 and without the card it’s $30. $5 each prescribed medication but some pharmacies don’t charge if you have the CSC card and also if it’s non funded then some medications can be $100-$600 + (weightloss medications etc) NZ

Ventolin in NZ was what I needed most as a kid with asthma, so when I went to Australia as an adult and I could buy them over the counter for 8 dollars, I found that amazing lol

This means when you go to the doctors for a kid you can get all sorts of things on prescription- such as head lice treatment, kids paracetamol and even moisturiser

The public system can be so hard when you have kids and yourself waiting but you cannot afford to go private for everything. We pay $450 for a 5 min paed appointment to get a script. It’s so hard sometimes. I’ve waited 4 years to see a gastro specialist publicly, then had a phone call which lead to nothing! 😳
