In Islam, one of the greatest examples of love after the love of Allah is the love of a mother. It is a love that asks for nothing in return, a love that sacrifices comfort, sleep, food, time, and even dreams so that her children can have a better life. Sometimes those sacrifices are obvious, but more often they are completely invisible. A mother may smile while hiding her exhaustion. She may say she is not hungry so her child can eat. She may wear old clothes so her children can have new ones. She may stay awake all night making du’a while no one knows. The child grows up believing everything was easy, never realizing that every blessing they enjoyed may have been built upon countless silent sacrifices. Allah sees every single one of them. Not a single tear, sleepless night, or act of patience is ever wasted with Him. The Prophet ﷺ reminded us of the immense status of mothers when a man asked who deserved his best companionship. The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Your mother.” The man asked again, and he said, “Your mother.” He asked a third time, and again the Prophet ﷺ replied, “Your mother.” Only on the fourth time did he say, “Then your father.” This teaches us that the sacrifices of a mother are beyond what words can fully describe. Think about how many times your mother chose your happiness over her own. Think about the meals she skipped, the worries she carried alone, the prayers she whispered for you while you slept peacefully. Perhaps she hid her pain so you would never have to carry it. Perhaps she cried to Allah in sujood asking Him to protect you from every hardship. We often notice the gifts we receive, but we forget the sacrifices that made those gifts possible. Every parent is different, and not every family has the same story, but whenever parents sincerely strive to care for their children, Islam encourages gratitude, kindness, and respect toward them. If your mother is still alive, cherish her before you regret the opportunities you let pass. Sit with her. Listen to her stories. Hug her. Thank her even for the things you think are small. Make her smile. Help her without waiting to be asked. Most importantly, make du’a for her, because there is no gift more valuable than asking Allah to shower her with His mercy, forgiveness, and Jannah. And if your mother has already returned to Allah, never think your connection with her has ended. Continue making sincere du’a for her, give charity on her behalf, honor her relatives and friends, and live a life that would make her proud if she could see it. Every good deed you do because of the values she taught you can become a source of reward. Remember that Allah is Al-’Adl, the Most Just, and Ash-Shakoor, the Most Appreciative. He never overlooks even the smallest sacrifice done sincerely for His sake. The burnt crusts that no one noticed, the hungry nights no one knew about, the silent tears no one wiped away—Allah knew them all. If people forget, Allah never does. May Allah have mercy on our mothers, forgive their sins, reward every sacrifice they ever made, bless those who are still with us, grant patience to those who miss them, and reunite us with our righteous families in Jannatul Firdaus.
