Imagine discovering a river so beautifully blue that your first thought is to capture it before the moment disappears. You raise your camera toward Oregon's McKenzie River. In the frame, turquoise water flows between dark volcanic stones, surrounded by a forest filled with deep green evergreens and moss-covered surfaces. It's beautiful. You take the photograph. But when you lower the camera, something becomes obvious. The picture captured the color. It didn't capture the way the water sounded as it rushed past you. It didn't preserve the changing rhythm of smaller currents slipping between rocks. It couldn't show how the sunlight shifted across the surface, turning one section icy blue and another brilliant turquoise.
