Who was Baba Bulleh Shah?
He was called Sayed Abdullah Shah Qadri. Born in Punjab modern day Pakistan. 1680-1757 at age of 77. He was from Sayed family (era of mughal empire) his family moved to Kasur. He was a legendary in the 17th century known as a punjabi sufi poet, humanist and philosopher. He became a disciple of Qadri Sufi master Shah Inayat Qadri from Lahore. At time of his death.. religious authorities at that time, denied him traditional burial at city cemetery.. 😔 because he challenged religious orthodoxy, caste barriers, fanatical violence between communities, empty religious rituals. Later Qazi Hafiz Sayed Zahid Hamdani led his funeral prayer and he was laid to rest just outside the town. Bulleh shah family was not happy that he accepted Shah Inayat as his master because they considered him from marginalized community, low caste. A dispute caused his guru to banish him, Bulleh shah cast off his pride, dressed in traditional attire learned to dance from local street performers to appease his master trying to draw his teachers forgiving gaze after Bulleh shahs family mocked him. Bulleh shah realized book learning and high birth, meant nothing before divine love. 😔 today his words as we hear them being generated into sufi folk music tell us what his ideology was about, he wasnt wrong, today we see what is happening in pakistan india. low, high caste, status etc "Bulleya ki jaana main kaun" another famous piece. Darbar Baba Bulleh Shah shrine was built over his grave (which is against islam) to worship on by all faiths. "Tere Ishq Nachaya" ie your love has made me dance like mad.. May Allah forgive him and us. The pain in his poetry tell us exactly what his philosophy was about. Insaniyat.
