A glacial outburst flood — known in Iceland as a jökulhlaup — occurs when meltwater accumulates underneath a glacier and is suddenly released. These floods can move enormous amounts of water, sediment and debris downstream. But there's another part of this situation we're watching closely: 🌋 VOLCANIC GAS. Gas associated with geothermal areas beneath the glacier can be carried downstream during these floods, creating potentially hazardous concentrations in low-lying areas. 👀 AND YES — KATLA IS UNDER THAT ICE. Katla is a large, active volcano beneath Mýrdalsjökull and has historically produced powerful eruptions and major glacial floods.
