Yet after just four months in Japan, his Japanese already sounded incredibly natural. 「どこから来ましたか？」「アメリカのフロリダから来ました。」 “Where are you from?” “I’m from Florida, USA.” いまは日本の学校に通い、ホームステイをしながら毎日日本語を勉強しているという。 He’s studying at a Japanese school and living with a host family while learning Japanese every day. 「日本語は全部でどれくらい勉強しましたか？」答えは——「4か月」。 “How long have you studied Japanese?” The answer was—“Four months.” 正直、その答えには驚いた。たった4か月で、ここまで会話できるようになる人は多くない。 That answer honestly surprised me. Very few people can hold a conversation like this after only four months. さらに目を引いたのは、着ていたアーセナルのユニフォーム。 Then something else caught my attention—the Arsenal jersey he was wearing. 「SAKAさんのユニフォーム？」「はい。」 “Is that a Saka jersey?” “Yes.” でも、意外なことに本人はサッカーをしていなかった。 But surprisingly, he doesn’t actually play soccer. 「サッカーやってますか？」「しません。ゴルフとバスケットをします。」 “Do you play soccer?” “No. I play golf and basketball.” 好きな選手への憧れと、日本語への挑戦。 17歳の夏は、きっと一生忘れられない思い出になる。 A favorite player and the courage to learn Japanese.
