Some Muslims assign numerical values to Arabic letters and when these values are added together they arrive at a specific number. For example it is claimed that if you calculate the numerical values of each letter in “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem,” the total comes out to 786. Whether this calculation is technically correct or not I have not found any authentic evidence in the Qur’an or any sahih teachings of Prophet Muhammad that support using such a numerical system as a substitute or shortcut for sacred words. Some people argue with me and say: since we cannot write the Arabic phrase “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem” on invitation cards or letterheads (out of concern that it might be disrespected), we use 786 instead. However I don’t agree with this reasoning. If you are concerned about writing it in Arabic, you can simply write “Bismillah” in transliteration. There is no problem with that. Even better, you can write its translation so that anyone—especially those who do not understand Arabic can clearly understand its meaning: In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful. For this reason I do not support the practice of using numerical shortcuts like 786 in place of “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem” or any words from the Qur'an.
