Burkina Faso has been added to a human rights watchlist by CIVICUS, a global civil society watchdog that monitors freedom of speech, freedom of association, peaceful assembly, and civic space around the world. And many people are asking: why does this always seem to happen when African leaders start challenging old systems? Honestly, I understand that question. Because history has shown us that when African leaders begin to control national resources, reject foreign pressure, question old partnerships, or push for economic independence, international criticism often increases. Suddenly, the same systems that ignored poverty, exploitation, insecurity, and underdevelopment for years begin to speak loudly about democracy and human rights. So Africans have every right to ask questions. Who is making the report? Why now? What interest do they have? And why do we hear more noise when African leaders challenge foreign influence than when African people are suffering under systems that keep them dependent? This does not mean human rights are not important. Human rights are important. Citizens must be protected. But African countries also have the right to protect themselves, especially when they are facing terrorism, foreign interference, misinformation, and internal destabilization. And this is where we must be careful. We should not allow every international report to automatically become the final truth about an African country. Because sometimes these reports may contain genuine concerns, but sometimes they also fit into a bigger political narrative. A narrative that says African leaders are only acceptable when they are weak, dependent, and easy to control. But the moment they start talking about resources, sovereignty, local production, military independence, and national dignity, suddenly the world becomes very concerned. So for me, the question is not whether Burkina Faso should ignore human rights. No. The question is: can Burkina Faso defend its people, rebuild the state, fight terrorism, protect its sovereignty, and still create a system where citizens feel safe and respected? That is the balance every serious African country must pursue. But one thing is clear. Africans are no longer willing to accept every foreign label without asking questions. We have seen too much. We have learned too much. And we know that not every country placed on a watchlist is failing. Sometimes, it may also mean that country is refusing to remain in the position others expected it to stay. So yes, let us discuss human rights. But let us also discuss security, development, electricity, food, control of resources, local industries, and the freedom of African countries to choose their own path without being punished for it. Because Africa does not only need political lectures.
