Here are some tips I found would have been helpful as a first time mom trying to breastfeed: 1. Breastfeeding doesn’t come natural to everyone → Give yourself (and your baby) grace! Positioning and latch take practice, you and your baby are both learning this together! (Don't be discouraged if breastfeeding isn't for you- FED IS BEST!) 2. Latch pain is normal—but only for a few minutes → If the pain continues through the whole feed, break the latch and try again. Baby’s mouth should be wide, lips flanged, and you shouldn’t hear smacking sounds. 3. You don’t need to wait 2 weeks to pump → You can start pumping whenever you feel ready. Nipple confusion is not a thing, you may need to start pumping to empty yourself after baby feeds from the breast anyway. 4. Newborns feed constantly → Cluster feeding is normal and not a sign of low supply. If your baby is constantly feeding, it doesn't mean they aren't getting enough, it's a good sign you're doing something right! 5. Knowing when your supply comes in → The color of your milk will start to turn a thicker white, rather than the yellow-ish color of colostrum. Your breasts will feel fuller, and firmer.
