Are we ‘holding the SpaceX bag’? More below 👇 Maybe, maybe not. IPO’s do have a pretty terrible track record in general. And whilst index providers have changed rules occasionally in the past, so this isn’t completely unprecedented, some of them are now directly changing their rules to essentially allow these mega cap IPOs to be included in their indexes sooner. Meaning these stocks that are IPOing will be bought by the index funds, potentially at their ‘high’, because the index funds HAVE to buy them if they’re included in the underlying index. And this could be whilst early investors and founders offload their stock to cash in. So we could be left holding in the bag 📉 It’ll be interesting to see what happens. On the other side of the coin, these IPOs could do very well. Who knows. I think the important point is though, these new stocks will make up a tiny percentage of the index. For example, the NASDAQ 100 holding for SpaceX is supposedly going to be between 0.4% and 0.7%. So it’s definitely not make or break, and it won’t destroy your pension or destroy your index fund, but the index providers have still bent the rules and it’s something to be aware of if you are investing in index funds I’ve got a full video breaking all of this down coming out in a few days on my YouTube channel!
