Medical Update for Our New Rescue ❤️ After bringing in this stray cat with disabled back legs, our veterinary team completed her initial examination and testing. Her blood work shows ongoing inflammation, along with anemia. Because her hemoglobin and hematocrit are lower than normal, her body isn't able to carry oxygen as efficiently. This can contribute to weakness, low energy, and poor muscle function. Her current hematocrit is 22.3%. If it falls below 18%, a blood transfusion may become necessary. She is also mildly dehydrated. Her chemistry panel shows elevated globulin levels and a significantly reduced albumin-to-globulin ratio. These findings suggest long-term immune system activity and chronic inflammation, both of which are commonly associated with chronic kidney disease. Her AST is mildly elevated, but because her CK level is approximately three times higher than normal, the increase is believed to be related primarily to muscle injury rather than liver disease. Her amylase is also mildly elevated, likely due to reduced kidney clearance together with ongoing physical stress. Although her routine kidney blood values remain within the normal range, the ultrasound tells a different story. Both kidneys show chronic structural changes, including increased tissue brightness and disruption of the normal internal architecture, findings that are consistent with chronic kidney disease. The ultrasound also revealed a thickened gallbladder wall, suggesting gallbladder inflammation. Based on all of these findings, the veterinarian's current assessment is suspected Stage 2 chronic kidney disease. Long-term kidney damage can reduce EPO production, eventually leading to anemia. Reduced oxygen delivery throughout the body may contribute to muscle injury, which helps explain her elevated CK level and the weakness affecting her back legs. The recommended next step is additional kidney evaluation with a urinalysis, UPC, and SDMA. Going forward, she'll require long-term kidney-support medication, good hydration, a prescription kidney diet, and routine monitoring through blood work and urine testing. Chronic kidney disease cannot be reversed, but with early intervention, consistent monitoring, and supportive care, we hope to keep her comfortable and give her the best quality of life possible as she continues her recovery. #savethecat #petrescue #animalrescue #rescuecat #helpstraycats
