Portuguese here 🙋🏻♀️We don’t celebrate Colonialism. We are deeply ashamed by the pain Portugal caused to many people around the world! But there’s a big historical difference between Colonialism and what we call the “Discoveries”. Of course that the places Portugal went to already existed, but they were unknown to Europeans. Portugal was a nation cornered between Spain and the ocean. Most products coming from Asia (spices or textiles) would never reach us, or very expensively. There’s evidence of the Portuguese being in America before the “official date”. Initially, the Portuguese wanted to reach India. It was about commerce and trade! That’s why the evidence of the Portuguese in America was more documental. In their eyes, at the time, Americans had nothing to trade. We celebrate the bravery of facing an ocean with limited resources. The belief that there was another world to explore and ways to reach different places. For the Portuguese of the 15th century, it was like going to outer space today! They believed in monsters in the waters; the end of the world where boats would collapse. We don’t celebrate colonialism, slavery, death… We celebrate the initial curiosity and bravery. We are deeply aware of our past. And that’s why many Portuguese are kind towards foreigners. We want to learn from what happened and not repeat it again. This is not about excusing the atrocities of colonialism! This is about understanding the different periods of history, so we can live in a kinder world moving forward! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

the Italian identity is the roman empire, and guess what mate....
every history has blood on they're hands "herois do mar" doesn't stand for rape and murder but it represents the brave men who discovered half of the world to give a better life to the next generation and never be forgotten in history.
There's a dark side in every story and we're not proud for slavery, but we're proud for giving facilities, hospitals, law that tried to be fair in a world where everyone could do what they wanted.
we didn't steal anything becuase it wasn't theirs, for them it wasn't even valuable, and what you're doing is very dangerous mind you that this was 600 years ago and you're using modern logic to try to comprehend what they were doing and this is dangerous cus it leads to fallacies.
I understand and there was dark moments, but so has in every other country of the world, do you think Africa is inocent? not even close...
The african kings had slaves, lots and lots of them what happen is that in exchange of something valuable to them the kings gave us they're slaves, most of them were already slaves it just switched property, another thing is that the modern concept of racism only appeared in the 1750s by British philosophers that were trying to push they're agenda, but in the 1500s the status of someone wasn't defined by color some examples of that is that a lot of indigenous people from brasil would go to Europe study and achieve great things.

Portuguese people are not proud of colonialism or of having been colonizers. We are proud of the Age of Discovery, our maritime achievements, and the role Portugal played in exploration and navigation. That doesn’t mean we celebrate or defend colonialism.

The way we learn about Portuguese colonialism in school is by making it sound very positive and monumental, as if it was all an epic tale of brave heroes. So a lot of portuguese ppl go into denial when that picture is challenged. It's very annoying to see such denial, but at the same time I understand we were affected by propaganda as kids.

"their entire identity" is such an overreach... no one thinks portugal was successful colonizers, we are pround in being good sailors and having some pretty big impact for nautic progress while being such a small, underdeveloped country otherwise. Bravery and ingenuity come from the fact that everyone in europe thought that you couldn't sail around afrika because the world would end and you would fall off, and we sent ships even without knowing they would come back. That's where those words come from

This comes directly from the way we learn it in our schools. Its quite stupid but thats what we are told, that we were the first to end it, and sometimes even that we were not that bad. It really has to change

Its not surprising it was set up by Salazar and his gang. Portuguese people still arent ready to decolonize their minds, its a key aspect of myth and common identity. It will change of course (hopefuly)

The thing is most people don’t have the mental capacity to put these events in their respective historic context! What Portugal did was not a crime at the time, and yes im very proud of the courage and guts it takes to sail in the unknown sea with limited knowledge, not knowing when or if u coming back to your family.

I’m Portuguese and I am sadly the only person in my community who has acknowledged this. It truly is rooted in white supremacy, whether they realize it or not.
