and the reason why it looks like "just a normal painting" is because it was truely revolutionary because everyone after wanted to copy it and so it set the norm

Would it be controversial to say that just because a painting has an interesting backstory doesn't make it good? Like the whole Klein Blue discourse. I don't care if it's a whole new shade or whatever if it's just a solid color.

as someone who knows nothing about art history, I assume that if something looks generic today, but is considered incredibly important, its probably because it was the thing that started the movement and the reason it looks so generic is because so many other artists copied the hell out of it until it became common and generic

This is why you guys, in the comment section, would not appreciate art history. You would appreciate learning things like fundamentals. You would appreciate maybe learning how to draw. You could appreciate art by its more surface level meaning or appearance but a lot of you guys do not care about art history.

this is why I can't stand people that (especially when talking about modern art) say that if you can't understand a painting just by looking at it then it's a bad painting. Art as any creative process usually requires understanding its context and messaging thru other means outside of it.

And that’s why we get educated. Because there’s context there we don’t always see at first glance.

in Brasil we have this, but is with poetry. a poet deciding to punctuate his work in a certain manner It's going to be a whole bimester of study

Art history is always like that. somebody gotta walk for us to run.
it's a similar story with Black Square by Malevich. it's literally just a black square, but its history and context is why it's a prime example of Avant-Garde art

This is the case with stuff line Citizen Kane. It popularised so many things when it comes to storytelling in a visual medium, that is now common place, that if you watch it now it’s boring and slow paced in comparison. Because everything that came after took what it did, and did it better.
