Jakaya Kikwete has earned his reputation through years of calm, dignified and principled leadership. Throughout his ten years as President of Tanzania, he was widely recognised for his humility, courtesy, respect for institutions and commitment to dialogue. He was not known for governing through intimidation or repression, but for consensus-building and engagement. The recent attempts to portray him otherwise bear little resemblance to the leadership style for which he is known across Africa and internationally. Such narratives deserve careful scrutiny and should not overshadow a long public record. Since leaving office, President Kikwete has devoted much of his time to peace diplomacy, mediation and conflict resolution across the continent, work that has earned him respect from African leaders and international partners alike. Let us judge leaders by their record and contribution. Jakaya Kikwete’s legacy speaks for itself. Leave JK out of manufactured propaganda and allow him to continue serving Africa as one of its respected elder statesmen.
