@mayinmidlife: Five years seems like forever until it isn't. This is the time to build options instead of scrambling later. Focus on: • Maximize your TSP and start learning about retirement. • Finish your degree or certifications using Tuition Assistance. • Start documenting every medical issue, even if it seems minor. • Build relationships outside the military through LinkedIn and networking. • Learn how civilian hiring works because it is very different from military promotions. • Save money so your transition isn't driven by financial stress. The people who have the easiest transitions usually started planning years before they ever had a DD-214 in their hands. Your future self will thank you. #MilitaryTransition #VeteranLife #MilitaryBenefits #TransitionAssistance #MilitaryCareer
Pay down all or most debt. Don’t acquire anymore if necessary. Boost your emergency fund. Go visit where you plan to land and go to TAP in that area. If married spouse and you are on the same page. Go to therapy as it’s a shift for all.

I started prepping for retirement at 11 years. Now, I’m coming up on 19 years and am expected to retire in 2029. The only two things I would add: try to pay off debt and start a profile on Clearance Jobs.

Make sure your medical record gets populated every time you visit doc. Also if your “gut feeling” says this isn’t right, go to the doc.

make complete copies of all your records, especially your medical records and keep an accurate account for all medical appointments. this will be extremely valuable when it comes time to calculate your disabilities if there are any. records tend to get lost, do your due diligence.
