@btr.org: Calling him a narcissist may help explain what you’re seeing. But it may not explain why he keeps doing it. Why does he lie about where he’s been, how he spends money, who he talks to, or what he’s doing online? Why does he hide information that directly affects his wife and family? Because he doesn’t want her to know, and why doesn’t he want her to know? Because the truth would give her the ability to make informed decisions about her own life. When a husband withholds information, he gets to control what his wife believes about him, the marriage, and the choices available to her. That control benefits him. He can keep the relationship, reputation, financial stability, family life, intimacy, or social approval he wants, while preventing her from responding to the full truth.
