August again.
Three years and I still catch myself doing the math wrong. Time forgot to move at your pace and kept mine instead.
You’d be twenty one this year. I say it in my head sometimes, just to see if it still sounds strange. It does. It probably always will.
I used to think of this as the last month of freedom before the semester starts. Now I think of it as you. I watch it come up the calendar like a name I already know is going to hurt.
Three summers. I’ve packed each one full. school, gym, work, driving nowhere just to think. And somehow, you still fit in every single one of them, like August saves you a seat whether I’m ready for it or not.
I’ll drive out to you again this year, like I always do. I’ll say happy birthday to the ground and mean it the way I used to mean it to your face. So, Happy 21st Birthday Tori. I wish you were still here.
Time moves fast. You don’t. And I still miss you exactly the same amount it’s always been — which is to say, completely. 2005 - 2024 🍀
