As Black girls, many of us wear braids, twists, cornrows, afros, or other protective hairstyles. These are not worn to attract attention or cause disruption. They are worn to protect our natural hair, keep it healthy, and make it easier to manage. They are also an important part of our culture and identity. Calling our hairstyles a distraction is unfair because it judges us based on our appearance instead of our character and abilities. If someone is distracted simply because they see a girl wearing neat braids, then the problem is not the braids. The problem is that the person has chosen not to pay attention. We cannot blame another person's hairstyle for our own lack of discipline. Schools are places of learning, equality, and respect. They should encourage students to express themselves in ways that are neat, respectful, and appropriate. A girl's hairstyle does not determine whether she is hardworking, respectful, or intelligent. We should be judged by our behaviour, our effort, and our academic performance not by the way our hair is styled. Some people argue that long braids are distracting. But if that is true, then why are shoes, school bags, watches, or hairstyles worn by other students not considered distractions? The truth is that distractions come from the mind, not from someone's appearance.❤️
