The question is why would she say no in the first place, in an emergency like this? Something doesn’t add up here..Maybe OP is using her way to often for things she shouldn’t necessarily do. For her to say no like that, in that situation..yeah something is off. The fact that he could say that comment to her says a lot about OP.

You’re the asshole for what you said to your niece, but you’re not the asshole for accepting her to help and emergency situations like this I can understand that it was an emergency. But any other time I wouldn’t expect her to babysit.

You do not joke about adoption, divorce, love, life…and I’m sure there are more. Even if she forgives you, and even if she believes you didn’t mean it, this will haunt her to some degree for the rest of her life. That sucks all around.

NTA. I started babysitting at that age. Not all the time of course but in an emergency it’s definitely fine. Kids learn a lot from tasks, responsibilities, and chores.
