![[ HISTORY ] THE 90 YEAR OLD RUSSIAN CATHEDRAL BUILT IN BRISBANE BY FAMILIES WHO FLED THE REVOLUTION St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral was built by hand in the 1930s by Russians who escaped the revolution and made their way to Brisbane through China. The parish goes back to 1925, the church was raised in 1935 and 1936, and in 1948 it became Australia’s first Russian Orthodox cathedral. A century on it is still a working parish, and one of the clearest windows into a faith and a community most of the city walks straight past. THE STORY BEHIND IT 🕰️ A century old: the parish was founded in 1925, making it one of the oldest Russian Orthodox communities in Australia. ⛪ Australia first: consecrated in 1948 as the country’s first Russian Orthodox cathedral, and its first purpose-built Russian Orthodox church. 🧱 Built on a budget: it looks Byzantine, but it was made with a timber frame, rendered fibro walls and a corrugated iron roof through the Depression. 🇬🇷 A Greek blessing: with no Russian bishop in the country in 1936, a Greek Orthodox archbishop consecrated the church. HOW RUSSIAN ORTHODOXY WORKS ☦️ One of the oldest: Russian Orthodoxy is part of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which split from the Catholic Church almost a thousand years ago. 🧍 No pews: worshippers stand for the whole service, which is sung rather than spoken, in old Church Slavonic. 🖼️ The iconostasis: a screen covered in golden icons separates the congregation from the altar, and here it was carved by the migrants themselves. 📅 A different calendar: the church follows the old Julian calendar, so Christmas falls on the 7th of January.
