@nicknamed.bree: 🤯 Is “avoidant attachment” just pop psychology? Will attachment science be debunked one day? Look, you don’t have to like the labels, but attachment is one of the most researched areas of developmental psychology. It isn’t going anywhere. #avoidant

I also think that in the attachment space it’s not talked about enough that people can show up differently with different people you can be securely attached to friends maybe anxious in romantic relationships maybe avoidant in others or you can be secure if other people are secure but if you come across someone extremely avoidant it could bring out an anxious side of you, I definitely have realised that a lot of people don’t have one fixed attachment style, I’m sure some people do but I know a lot of people myself included show up differently depending on how extreme the other person is and I like that it’s so nuanced though and not one size fits all because people can understand why a certain dynamic hurt them so much and why they maybe seemed so anxious when that was normally out of character for them 🙏🤍🤍

I am not an expert in attachment styles at all! I have learned a fair amount in the last few years after meeting and falling in love with a man who had an avoidant attachment style. I do have a question for you about the naming of the avoidant attachment style. It seems that there is a spectrum within dismissive avoidant from slightly to severe. I've seen/ read comments from some people with avoidant attachment who almost wear it as a badge is honor and believe their avoidance is actually maturity, etc., rather than a hindrance to attachment. Anyway, it makes me wonder if severe avoidant attachment ought to be renamed to something that better portrays it as a hindrance. Like, dysfunctional attachment or anti- attachment or something. That may not make any sense, but it was rattling around my head and wanted to get your take on it.
