As a server who’s running around through busy crowds, I put my hand out in a similar way as the lower back hand but just don’t make contact. This helps in the case they do step back and prevents them from bumping into you but you don’t actually need to make physical contact first

I am 5’0 my lower back is approximately 2.5’ from the ground. Any male over 5’9 has to lean down in order to be in my lower back zone. That’s how I know I’m not crazy, they have to LEAN down in a ground in order to touch me.
