In the colloquial speech and dialects of large parts of the southern German-speaking region - stretching from Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria to the Upper Rhine - the terms *Schnaken* and *Stechmücken* refer to the same thing. Small, biting mosquitoes are broadly referred to as *Schnaken*, while the insects properly known as *Schnaken* (crane flies) are often called *Pferdeschnaken* to distinguish them. It's therefore by no means a case of confusing the two insects; it’s a matter of dialect. And although I speak very little German, I find it strange that many Germans don't know and appreciate their own language, and that I'm the one able to shed light on this. 😉
