Riley is 7 months old. But because he arrived early, he’s only 5 months corrected. That means when people ask what he’s doing, or I catch myself comparing him to other babies his age, I have to remind myself that he’s on his timeline. Some days that comes naturally. Other days it’s harder. There are moments when I wonder if we’re doing enough. If I should be encouraging more independent naps. If I should be pushing wake windows. If I should be doing more tummy time. Then I look at Riley. He isn’t worried about milestones. He just wants to feel safe. Today that meant a contact nap. Extra cuddles. Taking things slowly. Meeting him exactly where he is. I’ve realised that’s what motherhood asks of us most. Not to follow someone else’s timeline. Not to parent the baby on social media. But to parent the baby in front of us. One thing that has helped me through those moments of comparison is remembering I’m not the only mum figuring it out as I go. When I open the map, I don’t just see yellow dots. I see mums with babies who sleep through the night. Mums whose babies wake every hour. Mums celebrating first rolls. Mums waiting patiently for milestones to come. Mums carrying babies who need a little extra support. Every one of us has a different story. Every one of us is loving our babies the best way we know how. And that’s enough. If today looks different from what you imagined motherhood would be, I hope you know you’re not behind. You’re simply meeting your baby where they are. And that is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. 💛 #newmom #momlife #NICUbaby #postpartum #motherhood
