tanjiro didn’t know how to eat pancakes because they were generally a western food (originating from the mediterranean before spreading to the rest of europe and the americas). during the taisho era, where demon slayer takes place, japan was going through a new and massive shift toward westernization due to the country wanting to model after european militarism, which was considered a peak of modernization at the time. this explains why he was slightly confused at the western dish and utensils but why the meal was shown and offered in the first place. furthermore, this era of westernization is also demonstrated through the occasional western architecture (Butterfly Mansion) and westernized clothing (the candid moja girls when tanjiro was in the city in season one, the demon slayer hakama having belt looks rather than traditional wraps, the rise of the gakuran jacket which were based off of european military uniforms, etc).
