Some days in the PICU remind us just how fragile recovery can be, and today was one of those days. This morning, Veya's CKRT circuit unexpectedly clotted off, which meant she was off dialysis for several hours while the team worked to get a new circuit running. During that time, everything seemed to happen at once. Her temperature climbed to 102°, her heart rate reached the 190s, and her oxygen needs increased. After she was placed back on CKRT, her blood pressure, which had been running high while she was off the circuit, dropped into the low 40s. The team first tried giving her fluid, and when that wasn't enough, they started a very small dose of epinephrine to help support her blood pressure. As scary as it is to watch those numbers change so quickly, I am always grateful for the team at Dell Children's. In a crisis, they don't sit back and hope things improve on their own—they recognize changes early, respond quickly, and constantly reassess every step of the way. Watching them work together during moments like today reminds me how fortunate Veya is to have so many people fighting for her. Tonight I'm praying that today's fever and instability were just a temporary bump in the road, that tomorrow brings back the bright, curious little girl we've been seeing, and that we can continue moving forward again soon. Thank you for continuing to pray for our sweet girl. She keeps teaching us what perseverance looks like every single day. 🙏🩷
