I would have described the whole number equation as 1st the number in a group times the number of groups. but since it is multiplication order doesn't really matter.

ya but it doesn't generalize or scale.. works with simple fractions. but if you get to 5/8 x 21/17. then you're stuck. you cannot visualize. it also relays on the kids ability to draw at scale. the progression isn't visualization it's abstraction.
