It's a lot easier to build bonds with people when you "speak the same language", and by the same language I mean THE SAME WAY. Im not sure if this helps but I understand what you’re saying. I’ve lived here 30 years and kind of grew up here, learning book Finnish and spoken Finnish simultaneously. When I hear foreigners speaking book Finnish, I wish they’d use spoken Finnish as it sounds so stiff, but I also know they haven’t taken the time or tried to find out the spoken forms (or feel strange using spoken forms or just haven’t processed it enough to use it). When going from book to spoken Finnish, we definitely go through a period of imposter syndrome. It took me ages to feel okay using spoken Finnish, and that was when Finns didn’t look at me wondering who or what I was.
