@sssstormi: Every year I convince myself that THIS is the year Halloween is going to feel like it did when we were kids… and every year I get humbled. I want neighborhoods where every single porch has orange lights. I want the crunchy leaves that somehow crunched louder in 1997. I want the one house that looked like a haunted mansion, the neighbor who handed out king-size candy bars like they were a millionaire, and that one parent dressed as a witch who stayed in character a little too long. Instead… we have Ring doorbells, “please take one” bowls that get emptied by the first kid, and twelve-foot skeletons judging me from someone’s front yard. I miss when every costume was slightly homemade and looked like it came from a grocery store aisle. I miss plastic masks you could barely breathe through, costumes that were basically a trash bag with Batman printed on the front, and those pumpkin buckets that somehow held 87 pounds of candy. And don’t even get me started on the weather. Why did Halloween used to be 43°, smell like bonfires, and have fog rolling through the neighborhood like we were all extras in a Disney movie? Now it’s either 87° and humid enough to question every life choice, or it rains with the passion of a thousand angry spirits. I refuse to believe Halloween actually changed. I’m convinced we all accidentally shifted timelines somewhere around 2012, and now we’re living in the “Halloween Lite™” universe. If someone discovers a portal back to 90s Halloween—or honestly even 80s or early 2000s Halloween—don’t text me. Just show up at my house with a pumpkin bucket and tell me we’re leaving. I’m not asking for much. Just a neighborhood full of orange lights, VHS Halloween movies playing in the living room, someone making chili, parents yelling “BE HOME WHEN THE STREETLIGHTS COME ON,” and enough fun-sized candy to develop trust issues with Almond Joy all over again.
