@realisticrecruiting: I was the top performer at my company for almost a decade. I kept being told the next promotion was coming but I kept seeing other people get promoted or more outside hires coming in. It took me a long time to realize managers and jobs will promise you anything to keep you working. It’s up to you to hear the quiet parts and take care of your own career instead of letting some leader somewhere tease the next great job that’s never coming. This moment changed the way I approach work, I still work hard and take pride in doing well, but my top goal is always taking care of myself and doing what I know I need to do. Not just hoping some manager takes care of me eventually. What was your work radicalization event? #careers #careeradvice

IDK anymore. Corporate goals are such a joke. They will move the goalposts each time you achieve something on their laundry list. The only way to move up is to move out.

I had a similar experience two years ago… got frustrated so being fed empty promises, insulted when the pay rate was halved while workload and responsibilities doubled. I pushed back on my lower increase and in response was put on a PIP for the first time in my 13 year professional life. Still trying to figure out a way forward

The keep working for the promotion you’re never going to be given hits hard. My boss left, I filled his shoes while still doing my own job. Then I was given 30 more people on top of the 20 I had. No raise, no promotion. “I don’t know that you have the visibility needed to be given this title” all while doing the job. They keep you in lower titles while giving you the responsibility to keep their admin costs down.

Being a top performer can backfire since moving you up could become super disruptive

I was in a temporary position for 6 months, had to apply for another temporary position(same job) last year and pass some interview and a test. It did not go well, so I was blocked from having a permanent position. Left 6 months ago for a job that pays double.

It’s really about whether or not you’re part of the “in group.” If you’re deemed as socially unacceptable to be a member of that club, then irrespective of whether you’re a rock star performer or not, they’ll never promote you to a position worthy of your attributes.

You get stuck and hit a ceiling and sometimes can’t even make a lateral jump even worse take something less in something adjacent. Was luck enough to be able to buy something with SBA

My professors taught me in college that we are all freelancers, and that the people who work freelance gigs are just the ones who know it. I was radicalized before I ever started.

if you don't get promoted and theykeep moving the goalposts, and you decide to leave; if they attempt retaining you by matching the offer, you shouldrobably refuse; because they've alreDy shown you that they won't fairly promote you; you'll just be stuck in a new level with new conditions

it is difficult to move to another job when you live in a racial bias state and you have dependents.

You just need to learn, we'll provide training, bla². They force you to learn abt coffee, drink it, love it, sell it.. but the thing is, i don't drink coffee. I'm a tea person. In the end, you're a bad person
