الحجاج بن يوسف الثقفي (661م – 714م) يُعد الحجاج بن يوسف الثقفي من أكثر الشخصيات جدلًا في التاريخ الإسلامي، فقد جمع بين صفاتٍ مدحها بعض المؤرخين، وأخرى ذمّها آخرون. * ذكر كتاب “أبراج الزجاج في سيرة الحجاج” أنه اشتهر بالصدق، ولم يكن معروفًا بالكذب أو الغدر، وكان حازمًا في قراراته، صريحًا لا يداجي ولا يماري. . * بينما وصفه الإمام شمس الدين الذهبي في “سير أعلام النبلاء” بأنه كان ظلومًا، جبارًا، سفاكًا للدماء، لكنه في الوقت نفسه اتصف بالشجاعة، والإقدام، والدهاء، والفصاحة، وتعظيم القرآن. * تولى الحجاج ولاية الكوفة سنة 75هـ / 694–695م في عهد الخليفة عبد الملك بن مروان، ثم أصبحت له ولاية الكوفة والبصرة وخراسان، كما يذكر محمد بن جرير الطبري في “تاريخ الرسل والملوك”. * أما ما يُنسب إلى الحجاج من رمي الكعبة بالمنجنيق أثناء حصار مكة سنة 73هـ / 692م، فهو من المسائل التي اختلف فيها المؤرخون؛ إذ يرى بعضهم أن المنجنيق استُخدم أثناء الحصار، بينما شكك آخرون في إصابة الكعبة مباشرة، وذكروا أن احتراقها قد يكون نتج عن نار اشتعلت من داخل صفوف المقاتلين. لذلك تبقى هذه القضية محل خلاف بين المصادر التاريخية. والله أعلم. Historians have described him with both admirable and highly criticized qualities. * In Abraj al-Zujaj fi Sirat al-Hajjaj, he is described as being known for his honesty and for avoiding lying or treachery. He was portrayed as decisive, straightforward, and unwilling to flatter or compromise his opinions. * In Siyar A’lam al-Nubala’, Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi describes him as oppressive, tyrannical, and responsible for much bloodshed. At the same time, he acknowledges Al-Hajjaj’s courage, determination, intelligence, eloquence, and deep respect for the Qur’an. * Al-Hajjaj was appointed Governor of Kufa in 75 AH (694–695 CE) during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. He later assumed authority over Kufa, Basra, and Khurasan, as recorded by Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari in History of the Prophets and Kings. * The claim that Al-Hajjaj deliberately bombarded the Kaaba with catapults during the Siege of Mecca in 73 AH (692 CE) remains a subject of historical debate. While some historical accounts state that catapults were used during the siege, others dispute that the Kaaba itself was intentionally targeted, suggesting that the fire which damaged it may have originated from the defenders inside Mecca. Therefore, this issue remains disputed among historians. God knows.
