We checked with local wildlife officials and the Sea Turtle Conservancy, and they confirmed that what we did was appropriate. FWC encourages people to move hatchlings back to the ocean if they’re in immediate danger. Baby sea turtles have only about a 1 in 1,000 chance of reaching adulthood, but this little guy had virtually no chance where we found him - in the road, heading away from the ocean.

These comments clearly KNOW NOTHING about sea turtles. If you see a SEA turtle going the opposite direction of the ocean, you’re supposed to take it to the beach sand and let it have its chance. Make sure it reaches the water. The turtle clearly has good muscles, look at him waving his fins around. He’s very energetic and HEALTHY and looks to be OK. What they did is fine, he made it to the water. He was not doomed. Yall pouring trash into the ocean is what KILLS Sea Turtles. Not the gentle handling from a good bystander.

99% chance he didn’t crawl there.. a bird probably picked him up and dropped him. I work in roofing and found one on the roof of a 9 story condo building. So no way in hell he climbed up there 😁

For all the people telling me about “imprinting” on the sand. Here’s what the Sea Turtle Conservancy said…many hatchlings don’t imprint on the sand for a number of reasons. Adult turtles with disrupted magnetic maps/orientation adapt quite well and use other navigational cues. They also follow other nesting mothers and usually nest close by to the original beach 20-30 years later. Imprinting is good but not completely necessary. It’s not a death sentence as they find alternative beaches to nest.
