I think the older generations see hotels with western influences as the epitome of luxury while the younger generations see the epitome of luxury as hotels giving us the best of the local culture. We see similar shift in shopping too. Rather than the younger generations buying diptyque and le labo, they buying local luxury brands like to summer.

It’s also I think about it being less “oooo fancy” (status, as you said)- but also because we want something that is UNIQUE if we are paying a heavy price tag. Like I worked at a high end steak house, but it was dying out because the older owners like wouldn’t update the style. Like this isn’t what the people 40 and under want as a steakhouse, it was giving very generic expensive steakhouse rather than an intentional and curated ambiance
