That is the whole power of this painting. A small child rests beneath the blankets, completely unaware of the guardian standing nearby. The angel’s wings stretch around the bed like walls. One hand holds a staff. The other holds a small flame. But the title says Watchers. Not Watcher. Blackshear described the flame as the presence of the Holy Spirit, which means the angel is not standing alone. The darkness remains. But the darkness is not empty. The child never wakes. The child never sees the protection. But protection does not become real only when we notice it.
