my dad and I used to read this book together over and over. I was obsessed with the movie and I think he was subconsciously teaching me not to let my mother destroy my light by ingraining it in me that no matter what life looked true value comes from a good soul.

As much as I loved this movie as a child and can now realise there's a message of being a better/kinder person despite your circumstances, I can see how much this film can feed children the idea of magical thinking and living in dreams which I believe is a physiological coping mechanism but it's something that's very hard to get out of as adults. That principal said the truth but because she's a horrible character we automatically cancel what she said and choose to live in dreams.

The camera movement in this scene is so powerful as Sarah rises and Minchin is lowered. You know Minchin was never called princess by her father and Sarah struck a deep wound.
