The Muslim polymath and philosopher who famously calculated the Earth’s circumference during the Middle Ages was Abu Rayhan al-Biruni (973–1048 CE). Living during the Islamic Golden Age, al-Biruni is often called the "father of geodesy". Around 1030 CE, he developed an entirely new, brilliant method that did not require walking long distances across deserts. Instead, he used a mountain, an astrolabe, and spherical trigonometry.

Cool but I have so many questions. 800 km is a non-trivial distance, did he have a clock? How did he know he was taking measurements at the same time of the day? How did he know the two points at 800 km apart? How could he have measured the straight line distance between those points so accurately. Also, he certainly did not use km 😂. What unit did he actually use?

Wrong he did not use kilometers as it wasn't invented in his time. He used Miles. Because 1 mile is a messure of distance and time. 1 mile = 5280 feet yes bit it also ='s 1 hour of an army marching. which is still how we messure light speed and big distances to this day. Kilometers only messures distance where Miles messure time and distance which is why people naturally gravitate to understanding miles over kilometers as we messure both at the same "time".

That's amazing accuracy considering that he measured the 800 kilometers by hiring a man to walk from one city to the other and count his steps!

hmmmm sounds flawed. did they know about analemma? every place on earth the sun is directly overhead at midday (not clock midday). how did he know that it was the same time when he measured?

how long did it take him to travel 800 km? let's say he used a camel, it takes 20 days. The sun has moved by then and the shadow angle is off. how did he account for this variation?
