I work with lots of first responders. debriefing is needed. they also need a safe space to process really awful things. and often beyond their control.

As someone with PTSD I can confidently say that testifying in court is not a treatment for PTSD. Its very scary and stressful because the other side gets to question you. Its not a supportive environment.

My previous clinical rotation did a weekly debriefing. it was outpatient PT so there were not many critical situations ofc, but it was helpful to know where everyone’s head was at and what was going good and what could be better. I wish more places would implement that format (especially inpatient care)

In the hospitals I’ve worked we get none of this so I would be surprised if EMTs/firefighters get any of these resources.

Debriefings don’t fix it all 🤦♀️🤦♀️as a partner of a first responder sometimes it’s the most random things that bring back the trauma!

I did not work in emergency med for humans but I worked in an emergency animal hospital where there really aren’t a lot of talks about mental health. I saw tons of trauma and ended up having to quit because of a certain incident that I still to this day can call up and see in my mind. I can’t imagine seeing dead children, gruesome murder scenes. I would think there would be a certain amount of compartmentalization that happens at least there was for me.

There are literally providers trained in debriefs for emergencies and providers trained in mental health for first responders (along with trauma, EMDR, etc). It’s so important. And as a therapist, many of us also go to therapy because even when you love the work, it can be very heavy. Caring for ourselves is critical.

please let me know what you think about this... I sent it to you before but you never responded. I'm genuinely curious. on the day Lindsay killed the children Patrick said that "she had the best day in a long time" and he had NO idea this would happen. this reminds me of suicidal/depressed people that typically take their own life on their seemingly "happiest" or best day from the outside looking in, and that's when people are shocked because it wasn't expected, but was planned secretly. Idk if this makes sense how I explained it...

I work security, I have seen some shit. You debrief after the incident, you do your report(s), and where I live companies are mandated to provide licensed counselling/therapy etc. to their employees paid for by the employer absolutely anonymous to the employee. The parade of first responders was ridiculous. Why not retraumatize them with having to publicly recount what they went through when it has no evidentiary benefit due to the facts already being clear and stated.

it seems like they will throw the book at her which is shocking! I don't think the courts will allow the medical people that dealt with her to be painted in a bad light...the judge not allowing other ppd women to testify is shocking and not fair at all!

In our State we investigate all child deaths and all near child deaths so I have had over 20 years and worked in 7 Counties investigating these and we would always go before a Critical Incident Review Board and we had to speak with a licensed therapist. It was a difficult job but one that has stuck with me the longest was one where we lost two children (3 & 5) that died in a meth lab explosion. The death scene was horrible and one baby was right at the door and almost made it out. My girls were those girls’ age at the same time. That was very tough. I pray for the mental health of all first responders. No one really thinks about them that much. On this particular case (Clancy) I do feel that mom and family was failed grossly. Such a tragedy!
