Well.. this makes no sense. What you’re saying does make sense, don’t get me wrong, but not everyone carries a leash with them everywhere they go. The person could’ve tried to twist the collar or use whatever they had available to keep the dog controlled. Like you said, we don’t actually know everything that happened, so I think it’s unfair to make an absolute assumption about what someone “should’ve” done. If a dog has already decided it’s going to bite and is actively running at someone, you can’t always just “scare it away” in the heat of the moment. It’s a completely different situation if someone has tools like a leash, pepper spray, or an air horn available. And yes, you’re right that it often comes down to fight or flight, but the dog may have already initiated the fight response, and the person was reacting to that threat. In that moment, the dog could’ve been trying to escape after the confrontation started.
