@laurenashleydmd: One of the greatest skills to have as a dentist: resetting and moving on. Way easier said than done in the emotional roller coaster of dentistry. #dentist #dentistry #nycdentist #SmallBusiness #smallbusinessowner
Sometimes I’m so blunted that I become a robot, constantly disassociating as I go room to room. One day this patient was raising his voice to me about a treatment he agreed to do since months ago, I let him have space, disassociated from the situation like a light switch, and went to check on another patient. I guess this sweet old lady patient overheard and told me randomly as I entered and shouted “I really appreciate all of you just know that” loud enough for the other guy to hear. It caught me so off guard bc I felt seen for the first time in a while. Some days are just worse that others but we just move onnnn u got this doc!

This too as an assistant I’m ready to cry sometimes, it’s hard. You have to keep the dentist cool, the patient cool and urself cool while keeping the schedule up and everything done properly, rushing to flip the room, quickly grab the next patient and open the door and put a smile on ur face. I have realized tho this has given me the ability to never escalate in an argument. You will never make me sweat

I haven’t had a vacation since March. On a plane for Mexico right now. After this trip I’m making myself take time off every 2-3 months. I’m burnt out. The dentistry isn’t hard. It’s the multiple personalities and always being positive.

Truly I hate insurance. Especially as a hygienist. Giving the perio talk just can take a toll on me when you have that one patient that insists on a regular cleaning because that’s what insurance covers.

I feel ya. I’m pediatrics, so we are up and down with the kids and then up and down with the parents. Double the personalities, double the questions, double the stress. You get better at moving on with time.
Very hard and I have been in the game 25 years. And soon stop those Saturdays

That’s why I prefer them to think I’m crazy for bringing my joking self into the room, look hey… that’s what keeps ME sane to see you and go through the days! What do you prefer? A sane dentist that can do their job or someone that takes everything from everyone and not allow to have a scape valve somewhere? Be who you are, coming from someone that has been doing this for 20 years. You’ll do it. You’ll find your way. ❤️❤️❤️

Believe me, it gets a lot easier as it goes. You’ll learn a little more about the patient as you see them more and more, and enjoy catching up. Just mindset that 5-10 percent of the people are going to mess up, figure that in. Look at it as time you can catch up on the things you have to do, knowing you won’t have to do it later on. Time is time, whether you label it as work time or play time
