Guys, I don’t think ‘idiot’ was supposed to be taken in the literal sense. It seems to me that he’s saying that an ‘intelligent’ person may not be able to love as freely as someone who doesn’t overanalyse emotions through pure logic and can embrace vulnerabilities that strict reasoning may advice against. Basically, how can two analytical people fall in love if neither yield logic to raw, human emotion?

I should specify that this quote is not 100% stated in any of Dostoevsky’s books! But the general idea is supported in most of of his novels, where the “idiot” is the one succumbing to love.

The “idiot” is the person daring enough to initiate, to wear their heart on their sleeve. Who knows the concepts of heartbreak and cruelty, but chooses to dive in romantically anyway. Who chooses to look ‘stupid’ in pursuit of love. They’re not actually intellectually dumb, just willing. The calculating “intellect” prefers loneliness to humiliation; to something uncertain. The intellect alone, can only observe and analyze love, not engage in it. They NEED the idiot’s sacrifice to attain love.
