On July 3, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 41-year-old Stephen Griego returned downtown after allegedly arming himself following an earlier altercation in which he reported being pepper-sprayed and robbed. Near Central Avenue and 3rd Street, Griego got into a dispute with 40-year-old Juan Ortega. After Ortega shoved him, Griego drew a handgun and fired two shots, striking Ortega and 38-year-old Richard Thyberg. Officers nearby responded immediately and encountered Griego while he was still armed. After repeated commands to stop, four officers opened fire, fatally wounding him. Police said an officer believed Griego posed an immediate threat as he moved toward the injured Ortega. Ortega and Thyberg initially survived the shooting, though Ortega later died from an apparent overdose unrelated to the incident. A fourth person was also struck by a stray bullet, which investigators believe may have been fired by an officer, though testing is still underway.
