god the absolute hopelessness he must've felt, doesn't matter if we go with the csa allegory or general canon, he watched his brother taking care of him, shouldering all that weight, and still be afraid of their father to the point of absolute obedience. dean locks down when john is there, he's an empty shell in contrast to the bright smiling kid that takes care of him. sam watched so often from the sidelines as 'the protected' how his father drilled all those rules into his brother. his brother who's so soft and full of love. he realized how he could rebell, and sit around, and learn however much he wants, while his brother had to juggle hunting, protecting them, taking care of him, and keeping the peace in his family. he felt that righteous anger that he didn't just deserve a normal childhood, but that dean deserved a childhood period. god. oh they make me sick. and if we now think about the guilt sam must've felt when he realized what else dean had to endure to keep him safe. not just throwing out his childhood to train, to fight off real-life monsters, but also to hide him from the monster they call a father.

I honestly ALWAYS thought it was so shity that Dean was always the bait growing up. Like when something happened since he was young he was 100% the bait all the time which is so fuckin dangerous against literal child eating monsters like wtf John.

dean, in his final moments, thanked sam for standing up to their dad. it really tells you all you need to know about their dynamics. like even after everything they went through, dean was still stuck in his childhood

I think there would also some resentment on Sam’s part towards Dean (at least in the earlier seasons), because if Dean was being raped then why would he choose to stay with John, his abuser, and constantly defend and side with him. And I personally headcanon Dean initiated the sexual aspect of their relationship, which probably would have absolutely disgusted Sam, even if he logically knew that Dean had been groomed.

This hits me so hard. I know I’m projecting here, but my childhood was exactly like this. I’m the Dean in my family and my twin sister is Sam, through and through. I did so much to protect her and give her a better life while she didn’t realize how much I lost and was hurt in doing so. I’m also a victim of csa so I really wasn’t expecting this on my TL…this was honestly amazing.
