Using a broken porcelain plate, coconut shell, or sometimes a special blade, the weaver scrapes the leaf to remove the green fleshy pulp, revealing the delicate, silky fibers inside. This is done by repeatedly pulling the leaf across the scraper until the fibers are clean and smooth. The first or the upper layer is called piña bastos and the second layer and the finest layer is called piña liniwan. It is a labor-intensive and skillful task, requiring patience and steady hands. The quality of scraping directly affects the smoothness, fineness, and sheen of the piña threads. Without careful scraping, fibers may break, weaken, or lose their natural luster, which is essential for weaving the delicate cloth. In short, pag-kigue is the crucial first step that transforms raw red spanish pineapple leaves into the prized fibers that Aklanon weavers use to produce the world-renowned piña textiles which is famous for its elegance, translucence, and luxury.
