@dramyexplains: If you have ever wondered why your GP switched you from codeine to dihydrocodeine, this video explains the main difference between the two medicines - they’re not just two names for the same thing. #pain #medicine #health #healthtok #LearnOnTikTok As always, this is educational, not medical advice. You should always check with your GP or specialist for anything about your own health or medications.

I'm 1 full week clean from 7 years on tramadol with no break, and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done 💪💪

It needs to be made clear that long term use of DHC will create dependence and addiction. I was on it for 10 years, my tolerance grew and grew. It got to the point that I was taking it to feel normal, without the withdrawals were horrific. I can openly admit I turned into an addict and at the end was taking 40 x 30mg DHC in one go. The withdrawals from this weren't tolerable and I had to seek help. I've now been taking Buprenorphine for 18 months and reduce down now by 0.4mg a month. I'm a working professional, home owner etc so not someone you'd expect to be an addict. At the end of the day this can happen to anyone and from the research I've done is actually quite rife among professionals such as Police Officers, nurses, solicitors etc. In my opinion this shouldn't be prescribed as a long term solution, it should be for short term use only so after an operation, dental work etc. Not for long term back pain.

I'm on fluoxitine which heavily inhibits CYP2D6 meaning that codeine will do nothing for me

I am fine taking Cocodamol but cannot take codydramol as it makes me feel so nauseous. Doctors didn’t believe me but after one of my operations they ignored me and gave me codydramol and I felt so sick and couldn’t eat anything which was a problem as they wouldn’t let me go home until I could eat. They let the dose wear off (I had to try and sleep as felt so unwell) and they gave me Cocodamol and I was back to normal, could eat and then go home! So I tell everyone constantly when I go in for operations now to not give me codydramol!

so why bother with codeine at all then? Wouldn't it make more sense for everyone to use dihydrocodeine instead as it's effect can be more predictable and they have similar side effects?

I got codeine when I had shingles. I definitely think I’m someone whose liver almost triples the strength of it. DHC did very little.

that's why dyhidrocodine works better for my pain, great thing is my gp has categorically said they will not prescribe it to me even if it's the one that works best for me 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’ve been on dihydrocodiene for over 9 years - it doesn’t work anymore. I’ve tried the slow release and normal ones. But they can’t put me on anything else. I was on cocodamol & normal codiene before.
